Jump start your day with Breakfast POWER!
Did you go on a trip this Spring Break? Hoping to go on a trip this summer? When you start driving, I bet you fuel up your car completely rather than putting just one gallon of gas into your tank. Right???
Speaking of tanking up...for breakfast...
The slump side of NOT tanking up...
Millions of us start the day (breakfast?) with dessert, a quick cup of coffee, or just a glass of juice. Hmmm, then what?
1. You get a quick energy boost--sugar high.
2. That triggers a surge of insulin.
3. The insulin brings down blood sugar levels, but without the modulating effects of fiber, it can get pulled down too fast and too far.
4. You can experience falling blood sugar and feel weakness, hunger, and letdown--the sugar blues.
5. Then you reach for another sugary snack or coffee to get your boost again.
Really, your body just can't run very far without the proper fuel. Many are needlessly fatigued by not eating enough early in the day.
So, TANK up with a solid breakfast
High fiber foods, plant-based foods, whole foods--none of the white stuff that is filled with air or high sugar. Remember, we don't put air or sugar into our gas tank. (:
Then you'll enjoy...
1. More lasting energy.
2. Increased longevity.
3. Better health.
4. Less mood swings.
5. Increased attention span.
6. Heightened sense of well-being.
7. Less apt to cheat on your diet.
8. And less time on the pot when you eat high fiber foods and drink plenty of water. Sorry pop & donuts aren't high fiber foods. :)
What a great way to start your day!
Lana's Favorite Granola Recipe
Pour into a large mixing bowl:
15 c. quick oats
2 c. shredded coconut, unsweetened
2 c. pumpkin seeds
2 c. sunflower seeds
2 c. nuts (almonds, cashews, or pecans)
1 c. ground flax seeds
Blend in a blender & then add to the dry ingredients, mixing all together with your clean hands (this works better than a spoon).
1 c. honey
1 c. olive oil
2 T. vanilla extract
1 T. salt
3 ripe bananas (optional)
Spread out onto 2 cookie sheets about 1/2 inch thick. Bake at 250 F for 1 hour, then turn off your oven and let it dry out a little more until you can put in another batch. It takes about 3 batches to get it all baked. I do this between my other activities on Sunday. Or, if I'm in a rush, I mix all the dry ingredients one day and then do the rest of it another day.
Remember, it tastes fantastic with fruitshake, frozen raspberries, or my favorite--frozen blueberries.
